The Vision: Digitalisation driving resilience in a changing dairy industry

The a2 Milk Company (a2MC) has a singular purpose: to pioneer the future of dairy for good. To honour that mission, a2MC recognises that being at the forefront of change for people and the planet requires more than just nutritional innovation; it requires a digital infrastructure capable of navigating a highly complex global landscape.

As the dairy industry faces evolving infant formula standards across New Zealand, China, and North America, and as a2MC completes its own strategic transition to be both a third-party and first-party manufacturer, the company’s leadership took a bold step in response. They moved away from the fragmented, legacy systems of the past to embrace a unified, cloud-based platform. This digital-first mindset is a pillar of their strategic focus on building resilience and organisational interconnectedness. By strengthening these internal links, a2MC ensures they are ready and able to pivot as the dairy industry evolves.

The strategy: Building an enterprise-wide digital platform

While it can be common across the dairy industry to solve operational pains in siloes, a2MC’s IT and leadership teams saw the opportunity to consolidate platforms, and thus consolidate their data, to create shared business ownership and transparency across departments via the Veeva platform. This approach has unified a2MC’s Marketing, IT, and Quality operations to provide a single source of truth, turning their consolidated data into a strategic asset:

1. Navigating regulatory complexity with agility

The global dairy and infant formula industry is defined by its rigorous and often shifting regulatory requirements. With the initial implementation of Veeva Claims in 2023, a2MC transformed how their marketing content and product claims are approved and tracked globally. The decision to take on this new technology was driven by the intention that every claim is backed by a trusted digital thread of evidence, acting as a vital stabiliser when navigating new formula and packaging standards. The new technology has allowed the team to update and verify documentation with increased speed.

2. Ensuring quick and accurate product inspections

Building on this momentum, a2MC applied these learnings to third-party manufactured product inspections and transitioned from heavily manual processes to the unified platform. This shift ensured all product inspections were producing real-time data and visibility into third-party manufacturing outputs, reducing risk of error and ensuring every batch produced met all necessary compliance standards before reaching the consumer.

3. Scaling through manufacturing change

Furthermore, the recent addition of first-party manufacturing through the purchase of the Yashili NZ integrated nutritional manufacturing facility in Pōkeno has also been a pivotal moment in the a2MC’s history. With their adoption of Veeva QMS (Quality Management System) in 2025, a2MC is integrating these changes and new manufacturing footprint into their global quality standards.

The results

By moving multiple divisions to a unified platform, a2MC’s IT team is proactively eliminating the need for costly, bespoke integrations typical of legacy software and spreadsheets. Instead, they have unlocked new capabilities within an already-familiar IT environment, ensuring the manufacturing team and corporate quality team were speaking the same digital language from day one.

  • Operational Efficiency: By automating the inspection and batch release process, the time required for a typical quality review has been significantly reduced.
  • IT Optimisation: Consolidating multiple functions onto a single cloud platform has reduced IT overhead related to system maintenance and user provisioning and allowed for a much more agile & efficient approach to new business process configuration in Veeva Vault.
  • Global Synchronisation: a2MC now manages in excess of 1000 active procedure, policy and work instruction documents as well as a similar number of claim and marketing assets across multiple regions with 100% version control, electronic signoff and complete audit trail, eliminating the risk of manual error.

A digital platform for tomorrow’s dairy

For a2MC, being predictive means being data-ready. The move to, and eventual expansion of, the Veeva QualityOne platform across multiple teams within the organisation has not only streamlined today’s operations, but has also set the stage for collaboration across regional supply chains. This digital maturity ensures that as the world’s understanding of dairy evolves, a2MC’s SOPs will be ready to lead that change.

“The a2 Milk Company’s digital foundation journey hasn’t just been about replacing outdated systems, it has also been about honouring our company’s purpose to continuously pioneer the future of dairy. By adopting and building a unified platform with Veeva, we’ve ensured that our IT infrastructure and data is as innovative as our products, acting as a strategic anchor through every industry change.”

James Madigan, CIO

a2MC’s journey with Veeva QualityOne highlights what is possible when an organisation aligns its overall IT strategy with its core company culture and purpose. The shift to a cloud environment has allowed the organisational stakeholders to be unified and empowered to bypass the limitations of legacy infrastructure and establish a secure, scalable framework that continuously builds a culture of quality while adapting to the evolving demands of the global dairy industry.
